Estimator
Location: Phoenix, AZ
Our client is a growing heavy civil construction organization delivering essential infrastructure projects across Arizona and select markets nationwide. With a strong project pipeline and a disciplined approach to pursuing work, they are adding an Estimator who can dig into the details, understand how projects will actually be built, and turn that knowledge into accurate, competitive pricing. This is an opportunity to learn alongside highly experienced preconstruction leadership, gain exposure beyond the desk through project and site visits, and develop into a trusted standalone estimator with meaningful influence over the work the company pursues.
This Role Offers
- Competitive compensation with a discretionary performance bonus and additional benefits based on experience.
- Direct mentorship from accomplished preconstruction leadership with deep heavy civil estimating expertise.
- A controlled estimating workload focused on quality opportunities rather than aggressive bid volume.
- Primarily office-based work with regular local site walks and minimal travel outside Arizona.
- Exposure to complex water, wastewater, utility, and other heavy civil infrastructure projects.
- An opportunity to grow into independent ownership of estimates and become a key contributor within the preconstruction team.
Focus
- Build complete civil estimates from plan review through final pricing, using detailed takeoffs, crew assumptions, production rates, equipment, materials, and subcontractor input.
- Study drawings, specifications, site conditions, and project constraints to identify scope gaps, constructability concerns, and pricing risk before bid submission.
- Price self-performed heavy civil work with a production-driven approach rather than relying primarily on collected subcontractor quotes.
- Support water and wastewater infrastructure pursuits, including treatment facilities, pump stations, utility systems, upgrades, and expansions.
- Manage assigned pursuits from initial opportunity review through bid close, internal review, and turnover to the project team.
- Participate in local prebid walks and site visits to strengthen assumptions and connect estimating decisions to real field conditions.
- Contribute to pursuit strategy, scope development, risk reviews, and bid planning for both fast-moving opportunities and larger complex projects.
- Work with owners, designers, suppliers, subcontractors, and internal operations partners to validate scope, pricing, and execution strategy.
Skill Set
- Bring approximately five or more years of hands-on estimating experience, ideally within heavy civil, horizontal construction, water, wastewater, or underground utility work.
- Read civil plans and specifications confidently and translate them into quantities, crews, production rates, and detailed cost estimates.
- Demonstrate experience building estimates from the ground up, including detailed takeoffs and production-based pricing.
- Be prepared to develop into an independent estimator quickly, taking ownership of assigned bids after an initial ramp-up and mentoring period.
- Experience estimating water or wastewater treatment plant construction is strongly preferred.
- Exposure to design-build, construction manager at risk, or other collaborative delivery methods is valuable.
- Experience with HCSS or a comparable heavy civil estimating platform is highly desirable.
- Bring sound construction judgment, organization, communication skills, and the ability to perform under changing bid deadlines.
