Assistant Project Manager / Project Engineer – Mechanical Construction
Location: Huntington Beach, CA
Our client is an established mechanical construction organization supporting complex commercial and industrial projects throughout Southern California. As the business continues to expand its project portfolio, it is looking for a hands-on Mechanical Project Engineer who can connect the details between the office and the field. This is an opportunity to gain meaningful exposure across HVAC, plumbing, piping, equipment, project controls, and field execution while working alongside experienced construction professionals and building toward greater project management responsibility.
This Role Offers:
- Competitive compensation aligned with relevant construction and mechanical contracting experience.
- Broad exposure to HVAC, plumbing, piping, sheet metal, hydronic, and related building systems.
- A collaborative environment that keeps project management, field operations, design partners, subcontractors, and vendors closely connected.
- Build broader capabilities across project planning, purchasing, financial oversight, building systems coordination, and on-site operations.
Focus:
- Own the project details that keep commercial mechanical work moving, from document control and coordination through turnover.
- Review drawings, specifications, and contract information to flag scope questions, coordination conflicts, and constructability risks early.
- Manage RFIs, submittals, equipment information, procurement tracking, and change records so project teams have accurate, current information.
- Coordinate HVAC, plumbing, piping, sheet metal, controls, and equipment activities with field leaders, trade partners, designers, vendors, and customers.
- Support purchasing and material planning by comparing quotes, validating requirements, watching lead times, and coordinating releases and deliveries.
- Contribute to MEP coordination, shop drawing review, clash resolution, and installation planning that improves field readiness.
- Help maintain financial and schedule visibility by tracking commitments, potential changes, project impacts, forecasts, billing inputs, and key milestones.
- Stay engaged through site walks, issue resolution, testing, punch work, closeout documentation, and final project turnover.
Skill Set:
- Bring 3 to 5 years of experience in project engineering, project coordination, estimating, or field operations within commercial or industrial construction, ideally with a mechanical contractor.
- Working knowledge of mechanical building infrastructure, including climate control, water distribution, fluid circulation, heating equipment, and related systems.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, submittals, shop drawings, and equipment schedules with confidence.
- Know how RFIs, submittals, procurement, change management, scheduling, cost tracking, and closeout fit together across a construction project.
- Communicate clearly, stay organized across competing priorities, follow commitments through, and solve problems with attention to detail.
- Work effectively with both office and field teams and be comfortable visiting active project sites as needed.
- Use Microsoft Office effectively, with experience in Bluebeam, Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or comparable construction platforms considered a plus.
- A degree in construction management, mechanical engineering, building systems, or a related discipline is valued, while equivalent relevant experience is also welcome.
