Senior Financial Controller

Location: On-site in Phoenix, Arizona or Salt Lake City, Utah

Our client is an established and growing organization serving the construction and technical field services market. As the business continues to expand across multiple locations, they are looking for an experienced financial leader to strengthen accounting operations, improve visibility into business performance, and serve as a trusted partner to operational leadership.

The Senior Financial Controller will have significant ownership over the financial performance and accounting activities of a multi-location operation. This is an excellent opportunity for a construction accounting professional who enjoys combining technical accounting expertise with team leadership and hands-on business partnership. The right person will help leadership understand what is driving project performance, improve financial processes, and build the accounting foundation needed to support continued growth.

Focus:

• Manage accounting activities and financial reporting across multiple operating locations, ensuring deadlines and reporting expectations are consistently met.
• Guide monthly and annual closing activities while maintaining dependable financial records and supporting schedules.
• Deliver financial statements, operating forecasts, budgets, and management reporting that provide leadership with a clear view of business performance.
• Evaluate project costs, work-in-progress activity, margins, and financial variances to identify trends and areas requiring attention.
• Maintain appropriate accounting treatment for project-based revenue while ensuring practices align with US GAAP requirements.
• Work closely with operational leaders to connect financial results with project execution, cost management, and profitability.
• Establish consistent accounting procedures and controls that can effectively support a growing, multi-location organization.
• Lead, mentor, and support accounting professionals while promoting accountability, accuracy, and responsive internal service.
• Coordinate financial documentation and schedules needed for annual audits and other compliance activities.
• Identify opportunities to make accounting workflows more efficient and improve the usefulness of information produced through financial systems.

Skill Set:

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
• 5 or more years of progressive accounting experience, including substantial exposure to construction, contracting, or another project-oriented business.
• Previous experience leading or supervising accounting professionals.
• Strong understanding of job cost accounting and work-in-progress reporting within a project-based environment.
• Knowledge of percentage-of-completion revenue accounting and US GAAP.
• Ability to analyze project financial performance, investigate variances, and communicate findings to business leaders.
• Experience working with ERP accounting platforms. NetSuite experience is valuable but not required.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with finance, operations, and senior leadership.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage priorities across multiple business units.
• Hands-on leadership approach and willingness to remain involved in both detailed accounting matters and higher-level financial decisions.
• Ability to travel periodically to support regional business operations.
