Controller – Construction & Real Estate Development

Location: On-site, Austin, TX

Our client is building for growth and looking for a finance leader who wants real ownership, real visibility, and the chance to shape the accounting function from the ground up. This is a high-impact opportunity for a hands-on Controller who enjoys creating structure, improving reporting, and helping a project-driven business scale with confidence. The right person will bring strong technical accounting depth, practical operational instincts, and the ability to support both day-to-day execution and long-term expansion.

Focus

• Lead accounting across corporate and project entities, creating scalable routines for a growing development pipeline.
• Build the accounting backbone, including workflows, controls, cost structures, and reporting standards.
• Own monthly close, cash reporting, forecasts, variance analysis, and financial packages for leadership.
• Oversee payables, vendor setup, invoice review, and cost allocation tied to active construction and development work.
• Maintain visibility into budgets, commitments, and actual spend, highlighting risks and opportunities early.
• Coordinate lender and investor support materials, including draw support, funding requests, and due diligence schedules.
• Manage intercompany activity, account reconciliations, and relationships with outside tax and audit advisors.
• Partner with operations and project leaders to strengthen documentation, compliance, and reporting discipline across the portfolio.

Skill Set

• 8 plus years of accounting leadership experience within construction, real estate development, or another project-driven environment.
• Strong background in development accounting, construction accounting, or project-based real estate finance.
• Working knowledge of job cost structures, change management, retainage, draw administration, and capitalization concepts.
• Experience standing up processes and systems in an entrepreneurial or scaling environment.
• Comfortable operating inside multi-entity structures with complex cash movement and intercompany flows.
• Advanced Excel and reporting skills, with the ability to turn detailed data into clear management insights.
• Able to work independently, set priorities, and balance strategic build-out with day-to-day execution.
• CPA credential and exposure to platforms such as QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Yardi, MRI, Procore, AvidXchange, Ramp, or Bill.com are valued.
