Senior Accounting Analyst

Location: Hybrid – Norfolk, VA (Greater Area)


A mission-driven nonprofit organization is seeking a Senior Accounting Analyst to support its financial operations across multiple initiatives including grant management, asset tracking, donor fund accounting, and reporting. This role blends financial analysis with operational accounting to ensure fiscal responsibility, transparency, and compliance across all areas of the organization.


As a key player on the finance team, this individual will collaborate closely with leadership to provide deep insights into financial data, contribute to financial planning strategies, and continuously improve internal processes. The ideal candidate is a highly analytical thinker who thrives in a collaborative environment and brings a strong understanding of nonprofit and fund accounting principles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct detailed analysis of financial data to support organizational decision-making and donor reporting.
  • Review and maintain financial records in compliance with GAAP and internal controls.
  • Prepare financial reports, reconciliations, and audit documentation for grants, donor funds, and organizational programs.
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries and financial statement preparation.
  • Research and apply accounting guidance and best practices related to nonprofit operations and fund accounting.
  • Assist in the management of financial systems and automated reporting tools to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  •  Analyze complex transactions including property management revenue, investment reporting, and endowment fund activity.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure effective problem-solving and resolution of financial discrepancies.


Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years focused on financial analysis or nonprofit fund accounting.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, internal controls, and reporting standards.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, lookups, and advanced formulas.
  • Experience using accounting or ERP software (Yardi, Blackbaud, or similar systems preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex financial data and prepare actionable insights.
  • CPA or CPA candidate preferred but not required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across teams.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit or grant-based accounting highly preferred.
