Construction Project Accountant

Our client is an award-winning specialty contractor that produces its own building materials and delivers high-efficiency roofing and insulation projects statewide. With backlog growing and a system upgrade on the horizon, they are adding a Construction Project Accountant to tighten cost controls, accelerate billing, and provide real-time analytics that keep field and finance teams in lockstep. What You’ll Tackle

• Own job-cost set-up, cost-code integrity, and WIP schedule accuracy for dozens of short-cycle projects each month.
• Investigate margin swings, material usage variances, and under/over billings, then brief project leads on corrective actions.
• Prepare AIA progress billings (roughly one-third of your time) and track retainage through collection.
• Collaborate with project managers to capture approved change orders and ensure timely invoicing.
• Drive a three-day month-end close: prepare journal entries, reconcile balance-sheet accounts, and finalize financials for executive review.
• Maintain fixed-asset sub-ledger and inventory adjustments generated by the production team.
• Serve as finance lead on an upcoming ERP transition (Microsoft Dynamics experience is a plus).
• Develop ad-hoc dashboards that compare actual pounds of spray foam to budget and highlight emerging trends.
• Partner daily with operations and production; walk the yard when needed to understand job realities.
• Mentor junior staff and step in for the owner during peak periods or vacations—an ideal proving ground for promotion.

The Right Fit

• 4-8+ years of progressive accounting experience with at least two years in construction or specialty trades.
• Proven command of job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
• Hands-on AIA billing and collections experience.
• Advanced Excel plus familiarity with construction ERPs (Dynamics, Sage, etc.).
• Comfortable on a jobsite, able to build rapport with crews, and open to change in a fast-moving environment.
