Cryogenic Systems Engineer

Location: On-site in Houston, TX (Relocation available)

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and optimize cryogenic mechanical systems operating within the 4 K to 77 K temperature range.
  • Lead the development of components, assemblies, and support hardware for low temperature applications.
  • Plan and execute laboratory experiments to validate thermal performance, mechanical integrity, and system reliability.
  • Develop prototype hardware, oversee fabrication activities, and guide iterative product improvements based on testing results.
  • Perform engineering analyses related to heat transfer, thermal management, structural performance, and system integration.
  • Prepare engineering documentation including drawings, specifications, test procedures, technical reports, and design reviews.
  • Partner with electrical, manufacturing, and systems engineering teams to integrate cryogenic solutions into larger product platforms.
  • Evaluate suppliers, materials, and manufacturing methods to improve product quality, scalability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Support technical planning, project execution, and engineering milestones while managing multiple priorities.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to engineering best practices across the organization.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Several years of experience designing cryogenic systems and mechanical assemblies.
  • Demonstrated experience working with cryogenic equipment operating between 4 K and 77 K.
  • Strong laboratory testing, prototype development, and experimental validation experience.
  • Experience developing mechanical designs using engineering analysis and CAD tools.
  • Excellent technical communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to lead engineering efforts while collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background working with superconducting systems, including high-temperature superconducting (HTS) technologies, is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of cryogenic refrigeration systems, vacuum insulated equipment, and thermal management techniques.
  • Experience supporting advanced energy, research, industrial, aerospace, medical imaging, or scientific instrumentation programs.
  • Background leading technical projects from concept through commercialization.
  • Familiarity with design for manufacturability, product development, and engineering cost optimization.
