Construction General Counsel

On site in Long Island, NY

A growing construction organization with a major field footprint is seeking a senior legal leader to serve as its top in house advisor on project risk, business strategy, labor matters, and corporate growth. This is a high impact role for an attorney who wants a visible seat at the leadership table, direct influence on operational decision making, and the opportunity to shape legal strategy across a fast moving, union aligned environment. The right person will bring sharp construction law instincts, strong executive presence, and the ability to balance legal protection with practical business momentum.

What You Will Do

  • Serve as the lead legal advisor to executive leadership on construction operations, contract strategy, enterprise risk, and corporate initiatives.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate a broad range of agreements tied to complex construction activity, including customer contracts, subcontractor agreements, vendor terms, confidentiality agreements, and strategic business arrangements.
  • Provide legal guidance on claims, disputes, and other contested matters, while helping determine resolution strategy and managing outside counsel where needed.
  • Advise internal stakeholders on risk allocation, project exposure, insurance related issues, and dispute avoidance best practices.
  • Support legal and business planning tied to acquisitions, strategic transactions, due diligence, and post transaction risk assessment.
  • Counsel leaders on labor and employment matters affecting a unionized workforce, including collective bargaining related issues and broader workforce compliance considerations.
  • Guide the organization on compliance matters involving construction operations, employment law, safety requirements, licensing, and related regulatory obligations.
  • Help build practical legal processes, internal controls, and training approaches that improve consistency and reduce risk across the business.
  • Partner cross functionally with operations, finance, human resources, and senior management to support both day to day legal needs and longer term growth objectives.

What You Bring

  • Juris Doctor and active bar admission in good standing.
  • At least 10 years of legal experience with strong depth in construction law, contract negotiation, claims, and risk management.
  • Prior experience as General Counsel, Assistant General Counsel, or a comparable senior legal advisor supporting a construction focused organization.
  • Demonstrated success advising senior executives in a fast paced, high growth business setting.
  • Working knowledge of labor law and union environments, including exposure to collective bargaining matters.
  • Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, or other strategic transactions, including diligence and legal risk review.
  • Strong judgment, executive maturity, and the ability to translate legal issues into practical business guidance.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and leadership capabilities.

Preferred Profile

  • High energy, proactive, and comfortable operating with autonomy.
  • Skilled at managing competing priorities across both field and corporate stakeholders.
  • Able to combine legal precision with commercial awareness in a deadline driven environment.
