Network Design Engineer
Remote, USA
A pioneering technology company at the forefront of high-performance compute infrastructure is seeking a Network Design Engineer to lead next-generation datacenter network architecture projects tailored for AI and machine learning workloads. This is a remote opportunity for a seasoned engineer to take full ownership of design initiatives — from requirements-gathering to creating scalable, build-ready network blueprints.
This role blends deep network architecture work with physical infrastructure design, offering a rare chance to work end-to-end on modern networking solutions for highly complex, compute-intensive environments. If you're passionate about designing networks from first principles and thrive in a fast-paced, customer-driven setting, this is the challenge you've been waiting for.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive the full design lifecycle, translating customer and platform requirements into deployable, scalable network solutions. Craft detailed plans for topologies, addressing schemes, routing policies, and configurations supporting AI/ML training environments.
- Design flexible solutions that support a variety of compute platforms, accelerator types (e.g., GPUs), and workload types. Account for diverse rack layouts, power constraints, cabling infrastructures, and physical datacenter environments.
- Bridge the gap between logical network design and the physical world. Factor in power distribution, structured cabling strategies, fiber budgets, airflow/cooling, and placement constraints to ensure buildable designs.
- Produce actionable deliverables including high-level and low-level design documents, BOMs, patching matrices, cutsheets, and technical diagrams that enable seamless handoff to implementation teams.
- Design data center fabrics for AI workloads that require RDMA capabilities and lossless Ethernet performance. Incorporate advanced congestion control, traffic engineering, and scalability strategies.
- Partner with teams across hardware engineering, structured cabling, software infrastructure, data center operations, and validation to ensure holistic and executable designs.
- Participate in design reviews, mentor others in best practices, and contribute to evolving standards, reusable templates, and reference architectures for high-scale infrastructure deployments.
Required Experience:
- 5+ years of professional experience in network engineering with a significant focus on design, not just operations or support.
- Deep understanding of datacenter networking from physical through Layer 3, including CLOS topologies, BGP, EVPN/VXLAN, and scalable addressing.
- Demonstrated experience designing and documenting complex network environments, particularly for high-performance compute clusters or RDMA-based fabrics.
- Familiarity with designing around platform-specific constraints, such as accelerator hardware (e.g., GPU server configurations) and facility-level limitations (power, thermal, cabling).
- Experience with structured documentation practices and producing LLDs, HLDs, and deployment-ready design artifacts.
- Ability to reason from first principles when developing solutions in novel and variable environments, not relying solely on standard templates.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands-on exposure to RoCEv2, InfiniBand, or other RDMA technologies in production-grade environments.
- Experience working with advanced compute environments or large-scale, high-performance systems
- Familiarity with multiple network vendors (e.g., Arista, Juniper, Broadcom-based solutions) and the design tradeoffs they introduce.
- Awareness of automation considerations when designing for scalable operations, even if not writing automation directly.
- Exposure to datacenter interconnect (DCI), WAN, or optical transport networking a plus.
Why Join:
- Lead real innovation: Be at the forefront of AI datacenter design, with a direct impact on the infrastructure powering the future of intelligence.
- Own your work: Enjoy unmatched autonomy and visibility across customer engagements, with full lifecycle ownership of your designs.
- Build for scale: Work on highly adaptable solutions that support a range of customers and compute architectures — no cookie-cutter design work here.
- Collaborate with experts: Join a mission-driven team with deep experience across networking, hardware, and AI infrastructure, where your voice matters.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Competitive base salary, commensurate with experience
- Equity participation in a rapidly scaling company
- Comprehensive health, vision, and dental benefits
- Generous PTO and remote-first flexibility
- Work with a global customer base and some of the most innovative teams in AI
