Traffic Signal & Controls Technician

What You Will Do

  • Install, commission, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain traffic signal equipment, control cabinets, and related roadway infrastructure.
  • Diagnose electrical and communication issues using appropriate testing equipment and proven troubleshooting methods.
  • Terminate, dress, wire, and program traffic signal control cabinets while ensuring reliable system operation.
  • Interpret electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, and construction plans to complete installations accurately.
  • Support fiber optic infrastructure, communication systems, and network connectivity for traffic signal operations when applicable.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and emergency service calls to minimize roadway disruptions.
  • Operate bucket trucks and other specialized equipment while following established safety procedures.
  • Work independently in the field while maintaining clear communication with project leadership and fellow technicians.
  • Travel throughout Tennessee as projects require, including occasional overnight assignments.


Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Experience working with traffic signal systems or a strong background in electrical or electronic systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical principles and the ability to interpret blueprints and wiring diagrams.
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical controls, low voltage systems, or industrial electronics.
  • Ability to terminate, wire, and organize electrical control panels or traffic signal cabinets.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to lift at least 51 pounds.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Comfortable working from bucket trucks at heights up to 120 feet.
  • Willingness to work overtime, averaging approximately 50 hours per week based on project demands.
  • Ability to travel throughout Tennessee with occasional overnight stays.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Commercial Driver License (CDL), or willingness to obtain within 180 days.
  • IMSA certification.
  • Experience with fiber optic systems.
  • Electronic programming or controller configuration experience.
  • Previous experience supporting transportation infrastructure or intelligent traffic systems.
