Flight Simulation Software Engineer

Remote, Nationwide

Our client is an established aviation technology company building sophisticated professional flight simulation systems for a highly advanced segment of general aviation. This is an opportunity to take a meaningful role in a simulation platform where avionics behavior, navigation logic, detailed mapping, and cockpit displays must work together with a high degree of realism. The company combines the resources and market presence of an established simulation provider with the visibility and influence of a smaller engineering team. For the right engineer, this is a chance to own challenging technical problems, shape a growing software platform, and make an impact that is easy to see.

This Role Offers

  • Opportunity to solve technically demanding problems involving flight management, navigation, mapping, cockpit visualization, and real time simulation.
  • Long term product roadmap with continued investment in new capabilities, stability, and realism.
  • Collaborative environment with experienced aviation and simulation professionals.
  • Opportunity to work across the software stack, with particular value placed on engineers who can contribute to both core C++ systems and user facing applications.
  • Flexible compensation based on depth of avionics knowledge, software capabilities, and overall technical fit.

Focus

  • Develop and refine software that models sophisticated aircraft navigation and flight management behavior within a professional simulation platform.
  • Translate ARINC 424 navigation data and procedure definitions into reliable runtime logic for routing, approaches, departures, arrivals, holds, and other flight path behaviors.
  • Implement accurate FMS functionality, including waypoint sequencing, leg transitions, course calculations, turn behavior, and holding logic.
  • Build and maintain modern C++ components responsible for real time simulation, telemetry, networking, and avionics state management.
  • Connect simulation software with X-Plane, working with DataRefs, commands, SDK functionality, and real time data exchange.
  • Contribute to desktop interfaces using JavaScript, Node.js, and Electron for cockpit displays, navigation maps, and other visualization features.
  • Develop software models for interconnected avionics components and support communication across simulated data bus and network environments.
  • Create and enhance moving map, airport visualization, and synthetic vision capabilities that reproduce complex flight deck behavior.
  • Partner with a compact engineering team to integrate backend simulation logic with frontend displays, troubleshoot system behavior, and improve overall platform stability.
  • Help expand a mature simulation product through new features, architectural improvements, testing, and ongoing performance enhancements.

Skill Set

  • Strong professional experience developing software in modern C++, particularly for real time, simulation, embedded, networking, or similarly complex systems.
  • Deep working knowledge of aircraft avionics and Flight Management Systems is required.
  • Hands on understanding of ARINC 424 navigation data, procedure structures, and common FMS leg types.
  • Strong knowledge of aviation navigation concepts, including instrument procedures and radio or satellite based navigation systems.
  • Experience working with X-Plane, ideally including DataRefs, commands, plugins, SDK integrations, or other programmatic interfaces.
  • Ability to translate real world avionics behavior and flight procedures into accurate software logic.
  • Experience with JavaScript, Node.js, or Electron is highly valuable for engineers interested in contributing across the full stack.
  • Understanding of network communication, data buses, or distributed software components used to exchange real time system state.
  • Experience with graphical mapping, synthetic vision, OpenGL, WebGL, Canvas, or related visualization technologies is a plus.
  • Familiarity with advanced integrated flight decks or technically sophisticated general aviation aircraft is highly desirable.
  • Pilot experience, including a Private Pilot License or Instrument Rating, is beneficial but not required.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work independently within a distributed engineering team.
  • Comfortable taking ownership of technically complex problems in an environment where aviation knowledge is just as important as software expertise.
