Director of Engineering
A rapidly growing, innovation-driven manufacturer of miniature brushless motors and compact motion-control assemblies is seeking an experienced Director of Engineering. You will guide a multidisciplinary team through concept, design, validation, and full-scale production of mission-critical products used in surgical tools and advanced automation. Focus:
- Define the engineering roadmap and annual project portfolio in partnership with executive leadership and quality teams.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a group of 10 – 15 mechanical, electrical, firmware, and manufacturing engineers.
- Drive disciplined product development processes that include requirements management, risk analysis, design reviews, verification, validation, and design transfer.
- Oversee design of brushless DC motors, power electronics, and sealed electromechanical sub-systems that meet stringent reliability and sterilization targets.
- Collaborate with Operations to establish capable, documented, and validated manufacturing processes that improve yield, cost, and throughput.
- Serve as the primary technical interface for customers, suppliers, and auditors, ensuring timely resolution of inquiries and field issues.
- Track engineering and production metrics, investigate root causes, and launch corrective and preventive actions that elevate product quality and manufacturability.
Skill Set:
- 10 + years of engineering experience developing electromechanical products such as motors, motion systems, robotics, or complex mechanical-electrical assemblies.
- 5 + years in a leadership role directing product development and manufacturing support teams.
- Proven success operating within regulated quality frameworks (medical device, aerospace, or similar). Familiarity with ISO 13485, FDA design controls, AS9100, or equivalent.
- Deep knowledge of motor physics, embedded controls, and the interaction of mechanical and electrical domains.
- Demonstrated track record guiding products through the full life cycle, including risk management, V&V, process validation (IQ/OQ/PQ), and sustaining engineering.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Biomedical Engineering; master’s preferred.
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts to executives, customers, and shop-floor teams.
Preferred Extras:
- Experience with hermetically sealed electronics, sterilizable medical devices, or high-speed rotating equipment.
- Formal training in Design for Six Sigma, Lean, or advanced automation.
- Prior responsibility for supplier technical management or global contract manufacturing.
