Electrical Substation Project Engineer – Protection & Control
Location: Remote / Nationwide
About the Opportunity
Our confidential client is a rapidly expanding power-systems engineering firm that supports electric utilities and renewable-energy developers with complex brownfield upgrades and greenfield interconnects. As a key player in our organization, you'll spearhead high-voltage substation design initiatives spanning 15 kV to 500 kV, guide junior engineers in their professional growth, and represent our technical expertise to utility clients, all within a dynamic, people-focused, and remotely enabled work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and refine complete P&C design packages, including single-line and three-line diagrams, wiring schematics, relay panel layouts, cable schedules, and material lists.
- Engineer robust station-service AC/DC power schemes, battery systems, and control-power distribution that meet IEEE and NESC standards.
- Configure SCADA data maps and secure communications links to enable real-time substation monitoring and automation.
- Run protection-coordination studies, develop relay settings (SEL, GE, ABB, or similar), and validate results with ASPEN, CAPE, or equivalent tools.
- Coordinate civil, structural, and telecom disciplines to deliver fully integrated substation solutions on time and on budget.
- Conduct site walk-downs to collect field data, validate redlines, and support commissioning or troubleshooting.
- Develop scopes, schedules, and cost estimates for proposals and change orders; track earned value and manage project risk.
- Guide and develop junior engineers and designers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and ongoing skill enhancement.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- 6 + years of experience designing high-voltage (15 kV–500 kV) substation P&C systems for utilities or EPCs.
- Proficiency with protective-relay configuration and settings, CAD workflows, and common power-system analysis tools.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; proven ability to collaborate in a remote environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Power Systems Engineering or related discipline.
- Experience with IEC 61850, synchrophasor/PMU deployments, or distributed-energy-resource interconnections.
- Familiarity with project-management software such as MS Project or Primavera.
What We Offer
- Competitive base salary plus annual performance bonus.
- 100 percent remote work, flexible start times, and half-day Fridays.
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k) with company match, paid parental leave, life and disability insurance.
- Professional-development stipend and a clear technical career path.
- Dynamic culture that empowers people, built on a foundation of mutual support, collective progress, and a passion for tackling challenges head-on.
